The Donald 2000 committee is bidding farewell to two remarkable members, Daryl Warren and John McConville, who have dedicated countless hours and unwavering passion to enhancing the town.

Their contributions have shaped Donald, creating a legacy that will endure for years to come.

Daryl Warren
“A Lifelong Commitment to Community”: Daryl Warren arrived in Donald during challenging times marked by drought, bringing with him a spirit of resilience and community engagement. Originally from Altona, Daryl first connected with Donald through a Christmas promotion, and he soon became an integral part of the local fabric. From 2012 to 2024, Daryl was an active member of Donald 2000, where he focused on securing grants and funding for vital community projects, totaling over $200,000.

Daryl’s involvement spanned numerous initiatives, including support for the Pony Club, Men’s Shed, skatepark, road development in the industrial estate, and the levee bank. He also played a key role in organizing events such as the Deb Ball and local bingo nights. His community spirit shone through his work with the Dolphins’ early morning swimming, bike riding groups, and the much-loved B‘n’S Ball.

A tireless volunteer, Daryl contributed to various organizations, assisting with paperwork for grants and helping out with Meals on Wheels, markets, the Esoteric Festival, and the Community Care Learning Centre. His efforts in revitalizing the old Donald railway station for community use stand out as a testament to his dedication.

When asked about his proudest achievement, Daryl humorously remarked, “Winning first prize at the Donald Show for a rich fruit cake every year.” This light-hearted response encapsulates his genuine love for the community and its traditions.

As Daryl steps back, Donald 2000 extends its heartfelt gratitude for his years of service and hopes he and his partner, Ting, enjoy some well-deserved free time. Thank you, Daryl!

John McConville
“A Pillar of the Community”: John McConville’s journey with Donald 2000 began in 1998, culminating in his recognition as Citizen of the Year in 1999. Over his 12 to 15 years as president, John has been a driving force behind numerous initiatives that have transformed Donald and its surroundings.

John’s significant contributions include saving the local ANZ bank from closure through advocacy at the highest levels, including meetings in Melbourne with key stakeholders. His environmental efforts are evident in the planting of approximately 10,000 trees from Lake Buloke to the township, enhancing the region’s natural beauty.

He was instrumental in the redevelopment of the caravan park, now managed by the Donald Football Club, and he played a critical role in various infrastructure projects, such as the reticulation of water for the footy oval and the construction of walking trails connecting key locations in town.

John’s vision for community engagement led to events like the Baby Boomers Festival, the Grand Parade, and a three-day music and wine festival. He was also pivotal in attracting essential services, such as Kyro Kids physio and doctors, and fostering local sports facilities like the basketball court and skate park.

When asked what Donald 2000 means to him, John described it as “a voice for Donald to promote and benefit the community,” emphasizing that it welcomes everyone, regardless of age or ideas. His humble nature shines through his statement about his most significant achievement: the levee bank along the river, which he worked tirelessly on to ensure the safety of the town.

As John steps down from his role in Donald 2000, he leaves behind an impressive legacy. Balancing his commitment to the community with raising four boys and running Donald Steel, John has demonstrated that no task is too great when it comes to serving the town he loves.

Donald thanks you, John, for your unwavering dedication and hopes that more community members can step into the roles you’ve so passionately filled. Enjoy your well-earned rest and a red wine!

Thank you, Daryl and John, for your years of service, your tireless efforts, and your unwavering dedication to making Donald a better place for all.
